About the author

In a world of disruption, change and adversity Mike Lee helps individual contributors, leaders and organizations activate the purpose-driven, future-focused and heart-centered skills to meet the moment and prepare for what's next.

In the wake of the unprecedented challenges of 2020, issues such as mental health, purpose, and human disconnection took center stage. The subsequent Great Resignation in 2021 revealed that conventional solutions like ping-pong tables and pay increases were insufficient for addressing long-term organizational problems. Today, as the rise of AI, the phenomenon of Quiet Quitting, and the looming recession dominate discussions, leaders are faced with the imperative to adapt.

Covid-19 fundamentally altered how we work, our relationship with work, and the expectations placed on leaders across diverse industries. In this evolving business landscape, senior leaders, emerging leaders, and those without formal titles must cultivate internal skills to navigate the new era of business.

In New Rules for the Future of Leadership I offer readers insights from my experiences with NBA players and coaches, examples of innovative companies, and my personal journey through adversity. Through a blend of impactful stories, strategic frameworks, and transformative mindsets, I hope the book serves as a guide for leaders seeking to thrive in the dynamic world of work.

Lead With Purpose

After working with over 50,000 Millenials and Zoomers who are now in the workplace, one thing is clear — they want their lives to be driven by meaning and purpose. They expect the companies they work for to be a force for good — both for them as employees and for the world. The organizations that can fulfill this need will set themselves up to win.

Stay Future-Focused

It’s vital that we combine a purpose-driven vision with optimism. Change is not coming. It is surrounding us. We have to accept the fact that impermanence is a fundamental truth of our existence. This means our vision for the future must continue to evolve, while we simultaneously meet this moment with optimism.

Lead With Mindfulness

No one wants to work for a leader who cannot lead themselves. The self-awareness developed through mindfulness creates a foundation for the emotional intelligence needed to lead in a world of disruption, change, and adversity. We have to be the leader the people can look to and say “Yeah, I trust that person to lead me into the unknown. I trust them with my career, my life, and my family.” Because subconsciously these are the questions people are asking.

Lead From The Heart

Vulnerability, connection, and trust foster psychological safety, enabling individuals to be at their best. When people feel secure enough to explore new possibilities, take risks, and or dare I say “fail” they generate momentum for breakthroughs. When provided with support to reach their full potential, they can’t help but feel that they contribute to and belong to something greater than themselves. You’ll attract and engage people with meaningful work and purpose, but you’ll retain them if they feel a sense of connection and belonging.

By integrating these leadership competencies with cutting-edge research on the future of work, readers can position themselves to inspire, impact, and influence not only their teams and organizations but potentially the world at large.

Included with each book is a mini masterclass that has writing exercises, PDF downloads, and guided meditation tracks to help drive home the principles from the book.
