In the fast-paced world of business, we think our success hinges on our ability to plan for the future. But, the truth is that in today’s era, a 5 year business plan can become irrelevant overnight. Amidst the chaos of deadlines, KPIs, and shareholder profits our effectiveness is tied to one simple, subtle, and yet powerful skill: the ability to show up with complete presence. Yes, we need to learn from the past. And, of course, we need to strategize for the future. But, the truth is that the implementation of the learning from the past and the solution-oriented action to create the future happens in the present moment. When we can show up with presence we tap into a source of connection, engagement, and fulfillment that propels us forward.

In most of the keynotes and workshops, I facilitate an interactive section where we dive into a series of questions correlated to the present moment. A couple of years ago I took an organization through this exercise and had a very successful CEO of a major advertising agency tell me, “At first I thought these questions were a little trivial. But, as we went through them I realized how crucial it is to be in the present moment.”

Each mental state listed below is correlated to either the past, future, or present. Let’s dive in.

Anxiety, Stress, and Worry

Where do anxiety, stress, and worry reside? We might experience them in the present, but they are correlated to the future. It’s the anticipation of what’s to come that often fuels these negative emotions, causing us to spiral into a cycle of unease and apprehension.

Regret, Guilt, and Shame

Similarly, regret, guilt, and shame are emotions we experience in the present, but they are deeply rooted in the past. Dwelling on past mistakes or missed opportunities can weigh heavily on our minds, hindering our ability to focus on the present moment and move forward with clarity and intention. It’s why Mike Krzyzewski, the legendary Duke men’s basketball coach used the phrase “Next Play” to help players refocus on the present moment. If someone missed a shot, missed an assignment on defense, or turned the ball over the teaching point was always to get to the “Next Play”.  Because when we focus on the “Next Play” we focus on the present moment.

Compassion, Empathy and Connection With Presence

On the other hand, compassion, empathy, and connection thrive in the present moment.  It’s not when you are simultaneously trying to respond to an email and be present with someone you lead. It’s here, in the now, that we can truly understand and relate to others, fostering meaningful relationships and collaborations that drive business success.

Fostering Collaboration and Teamwork Through Presence

Where does teamwork, collaboration, and innovation flourish? We might be collaborating to create the future, but these pillars of success are entrenched in the present moment. It’s when individuals come together with a shared purpose, presence, and focus that they can spark innovation, and drive results as a team.

Achieving High Performance Through Presence

When it comes to creativity, peak performance and well-being, the present moment is paramount. High-performance and states of flow are not achieved through frantic multitasking or dwelling on past failures. Pro athletes are a prime example of this. When Steph Curry has the ball in his hands with the clock winding down he’s fully immersed in the task at hand — making a play — free from past mistakes and or future failures.

Leadership Presence and Lifelong Learning

As leaders, our ability to connect with others, inspire action, and foster a culture of growth hinges on our presence in the moment. Where does leadership thrive? It thrives in the present, where we can lead with empathy, authenticity, and a beginner’s mind, always open to learning and adapting to new challenges — especially in a world of constant change.

Every mental state that we value as high-performing leaders—all exist in the present moment. It’s not about the number of hours we dedicate to our work, but rather the quality of presence we bring to those hours. In one of my sessions facilitating this I challenged the audience to come up with something they deeply valued personally or professionally that didn’t exist in the present moment. After a few seconds of silence someone yelled out, “Profits!” My response?

Profits are driven by the quality of presence we deploy on a moment to moment basis.

By cultivating present moment awareness, we can navigate the complexities of business with clarity, resilience, and purpose, ultimately unlocking greater fulfillment, connection, and achievement in both business and life.
