Rain was coming down, Indonesians on motorbikes were flying by, and I was inside a little cafe in Bali reading a A New Earth by Eckart Tolle.

“You don’t become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you, and allowing that goodness to emerge.”

After reading this line I had a major revelation. I have been reading almost my entire life, not to improve, but because I don’t think I’m good enough. There is a huge difference between reading to improve from the beautiful place you are already at or reading from a mindset of inadequacy. It’s the same reason I’ve worked so hard my entire life with anything that I have done. Because I wanted to be good enough to feel valued. To feel loved. Subtle but major awareness.

In basketball we always talk about taking your game to the next level. But, it’s crucial to create awareness of where our mindset is. Are we working really hard because we don’t think we are good enough or are we working to improve from where we already are. I think it’s that simple mindset shift that allows us to be ok with where we are at, because we can’t control what has happened in the past.

In life are you working ridiculously hard on yourself — reading, meditating and exercising — because you don’t think you’re good enough. Or can you create awareness of the goodness that already exists within you?
